Theophylline (Theo-Dur, Slo-Bid)

Oral tablets: 100 mg, 300 mg

Methylxanthine bronchodilator

Therapeutic use:

Used for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
Beneficial effects include bronchodilation, enhanced mucociliary clearance, stimulation of the respiratory center, increased sensitivity to PaCO2, increased diaphragmatic contractility, mast cell stabilization, and mild inotropic effect.

Dosage:

Dogs:

Bronchodilation: 20 mg/kg orally once every 24 hours, or 10 mg/kg orally every 12 hours (may increase to 15 mg/kg every 12 hours if no adverse effects at the lower dose). Note: the manufacturer recommends once-daily dosing only. Some sources suggest that the extended-release formulation given every 12 hours is needed to maintain therapeutic serum levels.

Cats:

Bronchodilation: 15–19 mg/kg orally once every 24 hours (extended-release formulation).
